Now, more than ever, people are searching for the secret to happiness. Thankfully, scientists have been studying happiness and have found some pretty compelling answers by researching thousands of people who are thriving. This relatively new science is called Positive Psychology. When we apply its principles to ourselves it is often referred to as “Applied Positive Psychology.” When we apply these principles to help others it is called coaching. Unlike consulting, coaching is not about giving advice and unlike therapy, coaching is not about delving into people’s emotional pasts. Coaching is about helping people apply the principles of Positive Psychology to their lives.
So what has Positive Psychology figured out about happiness? In a nutshell, It has found that the key to happiness is living a life that is centered around one’s own values. This is easier said than done and why there is an entire field of study supporting this process and also why coaching is the second fastest growing industry in the United States.
For me, “Coaching and Positive Psychology” are the reason why I love the work that I do as a psychologist and trainer. I get a lot of joy from teaching others the science and practice of thriving. This is why in 2010, we founded the American School of Professional Coaching. Our students study the science and practice of Positive Psychology and learn how to apply its lessons to their own lives and how to then help others do the same. Many of our students become coach trainers themselves.
When people ask me what my dream is, here is what I tell them: My dream is to fill a stadium with people who will learn the principles of Positive Psychology and Coaching. Then, each of those people would fill a stadium of their own and teach those people these lessons. Then, if we keep working and practicing these principles, we would have a much happier and healthier planet.
Some may say I’m a dreamer, but luckily, I’m not the only one. 😊
See you in class.
